Download MycoMatch Program

  1. When you click Download Program above, a file called MycoMatch240 or MycoMatch240.exe should download automatically to your computer, usually to your Downloads folder. It doesn't matter where you save it - you just have to double click on it (or click plus Enter). Read what's below first.

  2. If you don't succeed in downloading the file, you could get the MycoMatch240.exe file from a friend and load it from a flash drive. There is a wait of several minutes when you first click on the file on the flash drive. It is also possible to have a free DVD mailed to you. Click DVD for how to get a DVD and for installation instructions for the DVD. There is also a wait of several minutes when you install the program from a DVD.

  3. IF YOU HAVE NORTON ANTIVIRUS/SECURITY INSTALLED, Click HERE first.
(If you have SpyBot, you can ignore its warning about Bancos.Santander which is due to the way we decide what to keep from old MatchMaker/MycoMatch versions using MMUpdate.exe. SuperAntiSpyware also has warnings, but the program has passed checks by leading detectors of spyware, other malware, and viruses, including Malwarebytes, WinZip Malware, Ad-Aware, Avast, and Microsoft Security Essentials.)

  4. If you have edited the descriptions or added species or illustrations in a previous version, and you want to keep information about those changes, read the details here before you uninstall the old version.

  5. Before uninstalling or installing any version of MycoMatch/MatchMaker, make sure MycoMatch/MatchMaker is not running.

  6. Uninstall any previous version of MatchMaker/MycoMatch. Read the details here if you are unsure how to do this. If you skip the Uninstall procedure, the program will probably work anyway, but stray leftover files can cause problems sometimes.

  7. Double Click on MycoMatch240.exe (it might be called MycoMatch240) and installation will proceed. Single Click plus Enter works too, if you have trouble timing the Double Click.

  8. You are likely to encounter a screen that says "Windows protected your PC - Windows Defender SmartScreen prevented an unrecognized app from starting. Running this app might put your PC at risk." There is a More info link and a Don't run button. Click More info, then click the Run Anyway button.

  9. You may be asked if you want to allow a program from an unknown publisher to make changes to my computer. Choose Yes.

  10. If you encounter something unexpected, or you want the data in a particular folder, check HERE for extra installation details.

  11. There is a newly discovered issue on some newer laptops with Tree View This Category and Tree View All Categories. These are convenient ways of exploring how the different species are related to each other in orders and families, although they are not essential to how the program works. If you like to use this feature and your laptop does not access the trees properly, follow these directions: Type SERVICES into the windows search bar to find and run the Windows SERVICES app.

    1. Go to the service with the name “Touch Keyboard and Handwriting Panel”.
    2. Double click it, or Right-Click it and choose Properties
    3. Change “Startup Type” to “Disabled” and choose “OK”
    4. Reboot your computer
    5. If you actually need to use a Touch Keyboard or Handwriting Panel with a Windows Pen and Ink device, change the “Startup Type” back to “Automatic”.

  • This is a large file that now fills slightly more than a CD. Downloading could take as little as a few minutes, but it may take more than 20 minutes, even with high speed access.

  • You can install the program to a different application folder from the default location for applications. When installation starts, after you click Next, you will see the standard location.
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Matchmaker
If you wish, change this to another location.

  • You can install the data to a different folder from the default location for program data. (The default location varies with the version of Windows, but once you have installed MycoMatch you can find the location by choosing Data Location on the Advanced menu.) If you want to install to a different folder, a file called dataloc.txt must contain the new address of the data for the program to run properly. You make a file dataloc.txt containing the correct data folder address on one line, for example
    C:\Data\MatchMaker\
    or
    E:\Data\MatchMaker\
Using a text editor like Notepad, save it to a known location, then copy it into the same folder as MatchMaker.exe.
    (for instance C:\Program Files (x86)\MatchMaker\).

RESTRICTIONS: If you wish, MycoMatch240.exe may be given to others as long as all of the following information is transmitted to the other people and you do not charge for the program. The copyright for the illustrations is held by the photographers and the images may not be used for other purposes without their permission. The program and descriptions may not be used for any other purpose without the permission of Ian Gibson. The program is not designed to determine edibility of mushrooms and it should not be used for that purpose.
